Most people don't even think about giving their blinds a deep clean. They look at them and see there is dust on them and they may even once in a while take a duster to them, but a deep clean is something that seems like too much work. So the dust piles up over time. Even those who have a cleaning person come to their house likely still have dusty blinds. Cleaning people typically just take a duster over the blinds, which sends the dust into the air, so that it lands on something else in the home.
A deep clean of the blinds goes beyond that. Rather than simply dispersing the dust into the air, we remove it through a hand cleaning of each slat. What is dust? Dust, according to research published in J-Stage, is something that everyone is ingesting each day. In fact, they cite the Environmental Protection Agency's estimate of dust ingestion, which is 30 mg/day for adults, and 60 mg/day for children over 1 year of age.
The problem with this is that dust can leave you feeling miserable. They report that dust in the home includes components from plants, pollens, microorganisms, insects, skin flakes, hairs and fibers. It also includes materials contaminated with chemicals from combustion, furniture, interior materials, electronics, cleaning agents, and personal care products.
Why is dust a health concern? Dust can be a health problem for many people. Here are some things to be aware of regarding the dust in your home, and that is lingering on your blinds:
- A study published in the Journal of Environmental Health Research, states that household dust contains dust mites and other allergens that can cause sensitivities for those with asthma and eczema.
- A study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, states that house dust mites are a major allergen source and a significant cause of allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma. They also report that most people are not aware of this.
- According to the American Lung Association, dust mites are common in the home, can cause allergy issues, and that when dusting you should use a damp cloth, so that you don't stir up the dust and put it into the air. They recommend taking routes that do not involve using a feather duster, which just disperses the dust into the air.
We can give your blinds a deep cleaning, and we do it by hand washing them. We try to take measures that keep the dust from dispersing into the area. We will use a vacuum to start with if there is a lot of dust on the blinds. Then, we stick to hand washing each slat with a mild soap. This will remove the dust, get your blinds looking great, and keep the dust from simply moving to another area of your home.
